Coin catalogue

Bulgarian coinage begins in imitation and ends in fragmentation. The restored empire struck no money of its own at first: its earliest issues copy Byzantine types and carry the Byzantine emperor's name. The first true Bulgarian coin is Ivan Asen II's gold perpera, struck after Klokotnitsa, which shows the tsar crowned by St Demetrius — and it remains the only gold in the whole series. What follows is copper: the cup-shaped flans of Tarnovo, issued in quantity by Konstantin Tih and his successors. In the fourteenth century the coinage turns flat and silver, the grosh modelled on the Venetian grosso, the matapan, and reaches its height under Ivan Alexander. Then the empire divides, and so does its money — Ivan Sratsimir mints at Vidin, the despots of Dobrudzha strike in their own names, and the last coins are those of Ivan Shishman.

Imitative coinage

1185-121814 coins

The earliest coinage of the restored empire copies Byzantine types and carries the Byzantine emperor's own legend — Isaac II Angelos, Alexios III Angelos, Manuel I Komnenos. Radushev and Zhekov file these under the reigns of Peter IV, Kaloyan and Boril, but that attribution is an interpretation and is contested; the coins do not name a Bulgarian ruler. They are kept apart here for that reason. The exception is 1.1.1, whose legend + ФДО … B … ΡѠΜΝ reads “Theodore, emperor of the Romans” — Peter IV himself. Securely attributed Bulgarian minting begins with Ivan Asen II.

The coin type reproduces the billon coinage of the Byzantine Emperor Isaac II Angelos.
