Obverse

Large monogram composed of the letters АЛЕЗ (Алеѫандръ). Variants exist with different renderings of the monogram.

Reverse

Tsar Ioan Alexander on a horse walking to the right, with a stemma with pendilia. The Tsar has a short beard and mustache. He is dressed in sakkos and maniakion, richly decorated with large pearls. The ends of the loros are draped over the ruler's knees. In His right hand He holds a sceptre topped with a cross, and in His left hand the reins of the horse. In the upper and lower field there are groups of three or four pearls. Above the horse's haunches a monogram is sometimes depicted - an abbreviation of the title цесарь.
