Obverse

The monogram Ѯ and the title Ѱ (царь), united with a ligature of varying form. In some specimens the ligature is absent.

Reverse

Variant A. Tsar Ioan Alexander and Tsarina Theodora, to the left, standing, full-length, with divitision, maniakion, and loros, holding between them a long-handled cross. In the field, the inscription ФЕОДО - ИУ - АЛЕ - Ф (царь) or its variants. The Tsar wears a stemma with pendilia and in His left hand holds a sceptre with a cross, while the Tsarina wears a three-pointed crown and in Her right hand holds a sceptre with two round expansions at the top. Variant B. The depiction is as in Variant A, but the Tsarina is on the left and the inscription is reduced to ФЕ, referring only to her. Variant C. The depiction is as in Variant A, but the Tsarina is dressed in chiton and himation, and the cross held by both with the Tsar is double (patriarchal). Variant D. The depiction is as in Variant A, but instead of an inscription there are dots.
