Brother of tsar George I Terter and uncle of Theodore Svetoslav. Returning from Tatar exile, he married a daughter of tsar Smilets around 1298 and received the region of Kran as her dowry — the beginning of the despotate of Kran. After Smilets' death he governed with his mother-in-law in the name of the under-age Ivan. He later came to terms with Theodore Svetoslav and acknowledged Tarnovo's overlordship; in 1302 he defeated and blinded the sebastokrator Radoslav, who was advancing with a Byzantine force.
