Biography
Andrey Asen was a son of the panhypersebastos Isaac Asen and a brother of the grand primikerios Andronikos, of Michael, and of Irene Asenina Philanthropene.
Shortly after the abdication of John VI Kantakouzenos (December 1354), at the start of 1355 Andrey and his brother Michael were sent by Emperor John V Palaiologos to the Morea to remove from there Despot Manuel Kantakouzenos; at first they had successes, but were forced to withdraw without achieving their aim. Around 1373–1374 Andrey was a correspondent of the eminent Byzantine scholar Demetrios Kydones.
