Synodikon of Tsar Boril

The most heavily cited written source in the study of the Second Bulgarian Empire, and it is cited for something it was not written to do. The council text condemns the Bogomils; the value lies in the lists appended after it, which name tsars, tsaritsas, patriarchs and boyars in order, generation by generation.

Without those lists most of the dynasty's women, and several of its short-reigning men, would be nameless. Nearly every family tree of the Asen and Shishman houses rests on them.

Survives in two copies: the Palauzov copy in Sofia (14th c.) and the Drinov copy. Entries were added over more than a century, so the lists are not the work of one moment and their order is itself evidence.
