Tsaritsa

Anna-Maria of Hungary

Daughter of the Hungarian king Andrew II, wife of Ivan Asen II and mother of Kaliman Asen I and of Elena, wife of the Nicaean emperor Theodore II Laskaris.

Biography

Anna-Maria was a daughter of the Hungarian king Andrew II. She became a wife of Tsar Ivan Asen II — a marriage that sealed the alliance between Bulgaria and Hungary in the first years of his reign.

From this marriage were born the son Kaliman Asen I, who inherited the throne as a child in 1241, and the daughter Elena, married to the Nicaean heir and later emperor Theodore II Laskaris. Anna-Maria herself died early: by around 1237 Ivan Asen II was already free to enter a new, politically more advantageous marriage with Irene Komnene, daughter of the captive Epirote ruler Theodore Komnenos.
