Anna-Maria of Hungary
- Title
- Tsaritsa
Biography
Anna-Maria was a daughter of the Hungarian king Andrew II. She became the first wife of Tsar Ivan Asen II — a marriage that sealed the alliance between Bulgaria and Hungary in the first years of his reign.
From this marriage was born the son Kaliman Asen I, who inherited the throne as a child in 1241. Anna-Maria herself died early: by around 1237 Ivan Asen II was already free to enter a new, politically more advantageous marriage with Irene Komnene, daughter of the captive Epirote ruler Theodore Komnenos.
