The Second Bulgarian Empire (1185–1396) was ruled by four successive dynasties — the Asen, Terter, Smilets and Shishman houses — from the uprising of the brothers Peter and Asen against Byzantium to the fall of Tarnovo to the Ottomans. This family tree charts every tsar and their relatives across those two centuries, together with the Asens in Byzantium: the descendants of Ivan Asen III, who lived on in Constantinople as the noble Asanes family. Anna Komnene Doukaina Palaiologina Asenina was a daughter of the protostrator Theodore Synadenos and the wife of Despot Manuel Asen, whom she married in December 1321. Through this marriage the Synadenos family was bound to the Byzantine branch of the Asens.
Together with her husband she is depicted in a donor portrait in the typikon of the Constantinopolitan monastery of the Virgin; her kinship ties secured for Manuel Asen estates around Bizye, legitimised as an appanage in the mid-fourteenth century.
