Asens in Byzantium

Theodora Asenina

Daughter of Yoan III Asen and Irene Palaiologina, niece of emperor Andronikos II. In 1321 married to Manuel Tagaris, a governor in the Byzantine East.

Biography

Theodora Asenina was a daughter of Tsar Ivan Asen III (John III Asen) and Irene Palaiologina, and thus a niece of Emperor Andronikos II Palaiologos.

In 1308 Theodora married the Catalan nobleman Ferran Ximenes d'Arenós. The sources are silent on the fate of this marriage, but from a synodal decision of 1343 it is known that in 1321 she married again — to Manuel Tagaris, a prominent Byzantine governor in the East. After this her traces are lost.
