The Tarnovo Literary School
The Tarnovo Literary School was the culmination of Bulgaria's medieval Slavonic literary tradition and one of the most influential cultural movements of the late Byzantine commonwealth. It flourished through the conjunction of Tsar Ivan Alexander's patronage, the monastic and Hesychast networks linking Bulgaria with Constantinople and Mount Athos, and Patriarch Euthymius's disciplined program of textual, linguistic, and literary renewal. Its writers produced revised liturgical books, saints' lives, encomia, epistles, translations, chronicles, and magnificently illuminated manuscripts while transforming Tarnovo's relic cults into a literature of sacred history. After the Ottoman conquest, its people, books, and standards migrated to Serbia, Moldavia, Wallachia, and Rus, creating what became known as the Second South Slavic Influence.
