Biography
Raoul Asen bore, besides the family name Asen, that of the noble Byzantine Raoul family — a sign of the interweaving of the Asens with the high aristocracy of the Empire.
The sources for him are extremely scant: he is known only by name, as a member of the ramified Byzantine branch of the family, without his exact place in the pedigree being determinable.
