The Second Bulgarian Empire (1185–1396) was ruled by four successive dynasties — the Asen, Terter, Smilets and Shishman houses — from the uprising of the brothers Peter and Asen against Byzantium to the fall of Tarnovo to the Ottomans. Anna Asenina
„comitissa de Acchisio”
Anna Asenina, called in the Latin sources comitissa de Acchisio (countess of Acchisio) and "nobili mulieri Anne de Constantinopoli," is mentioned in several letters of Pope Gregory XI (c. 1372–1374). Scholars do not doubt her membership of the Asen family.
Her Latin title suggests a marriage into the Western nobility — another witness to the wide connections of the Asens with the Latin world.
